The Macau Olympic Committee (COM) and its Mozambican counterpart signed a co-operation agreement during the visit to Maputo by Manuel Silv\u00e9rio, President of ACOLOP and 1st Vice-President of COM, which essentially aims to provide mutual support in the preparation of training courses for sports delegations. \"The importance of signing this agreement is very great,\" explained Marcelino Macome, president of the Mozambican Olympic Committee, analysing Manuel Silv\u00e9rio's visit to the country's capital. \"Its aim is to get the youth of Mozambique and Macau to exchange through sport, which is of great significance to us.\" The preparation of the Mozambican sports delegation for the 2008 Olympic Games will be the first concrete action arising from the agreement now signed. With regard to the multi-sport event in Beijing, given the fact that most of the disciplines are still in the qualifying phase, \"it is difficult to make a prediction at the moment about the number of athletes we will take to Beijing\" and, before that, to Macau. The Mozambican Olympic Committee is carrying out preparatory work with a view to the participation of \"a reasonable group of athletes.\" According to Marcelino Macome, \"the national women's basketball coach is in the United States, trying to create the conditions for our best athletes to take part in the Olympic Games.\" Mozambique faces a complicated problem when it comes to female athletes: \"They play in the United States and Europe, we want to be able to call them up to the national team, but it's not always possible.\" From words to deeds During the signing ceremony of the co-operation agreement - which was attended by the Minister for Youth and Sports, David Simango, and many members of the local sports community, including M\u00e1rio Coluna - Manuel Silv\u00e9rio guaranteed that the Mozambican sports delegation would be received in Macau under the best possible conditions. Marcelino Macome has no doubts and recalls that \"this agreement has formalised cooperation that already existed, since more than sixty Mozambican athletes have been in Macau over the last two years.\" It was also the translation of one of ACOLOP's objectives - to strengthen relations between its members - and it also allowed the Mozambican sports community to gain a more in-depth knowledge of the work that the Association proposes to do. As an internal assessment of Manuel Silv\u00e9rio's visit to Mozambique, Marcelino Macome began by emphasising that the trip \"strengthened the involvement of the authorities\" in the ACOLOP project, and also had consequences for relations between the local and Macau Olympic Committees. \"We feel very honoured by this visit,\" he added, \"the president of ACOLOP was received by the highest authorities, who showed themselves to be totally available to support the Association's projects as much as possible.\" The president of the Olympic Committee added that \"at the level of both government structures and the Mozambican sports family, Manuel Silv\u00e9rio had the opportunity to explain the principles by which ACOLOP is governed.\" The result? \"Greater involvement and a much more concrete idea of what the Association of Portuguese-speaking Olympic Committees is and that it doesn't stop at organising the Lusophone Games,\" concluded Macome. Manuel Silv\u00e9rio spent four days in Maputo and is now in South Africa. In addition to the agreement signed between the Macau and Mozambican Olympic Committees, the foundations were laid for the creation of a co-operation mechanism with the Mozambican Writers' Association.
