The Lusophone Games are planned for 2026, possibly between March and April, with a renewed model in which the competition becomes a beach event, emphasising the coastal connection of all ACOLOP member countries, which results in a reduction in costs and a parallel link with the protection of the oceans and the promotion of the blue economy.
The event now represents preparation for the Youth Olympic Games.
The Executive Committee approved the specifications for the Lusophone Games at the General Assembly on 29 October in Cascais, Lisbon. The next steps will be to draw up the event manual, the notice of competition and the application form, and to create the CPLP Observer Statute.
The Lusophone Games were held for the first time in 2006 in Macau, with the participation of 12 countries or territories and more than 700 athletes. Its motto was "Four continents, one language, united by sport" and it included eight sports (football, basketball, athletics, futsal, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball and beach volleyball).
It then had two more editions in Portugal, in 2009, and another in Goa in 2014. Since then, the ACOLOP countries have been unable to continue the competition.
