March is celebrated in Cape Verde as Women's Month. Filomena Fortes, president of the Association of Portuguese-speaking Olympic Committees (ACOLOP), is undoubtedly one of the women who has marked the country's reality and, even more undoubtedly, the woman who has most marked Cape Verdean sport.
Regarded as a reference and role model for many other women and men in and out of sport, Filomena Fortes has been recognised for her role in encouraging participation in sports leadership at all levels.
The tribute paid by Cape Verdean newspaper Expresso das Ilhas is therefore just and necessary, in a world where more and more sports organisations are striving for gender equality and equal access to opportunities. ACOLOP is proud to be one of those organisations.
