O Lisbon Panathlon Club reinforces its commitment to ethics and social values in sport with yet another session of reflection and debate, this time dedicated to the theme "Paralympism, Sport for People with Disabilities and Inclusion", which will take place on Thursday 16th October, from 19:30 to 21:00 (Portuguese time), in the Auditorium of the Portuguese Olympic Committee e live on the Panathlon Clube de Lisboa YouTube channel.
Recognising sport as a powerful tool for social transformationThe Panathlon Club of Lisbon maintains a regular programme of debates that promote ethics, respect and inclusion. In the context of paralympismThese values take on an even deeper meaning, showing how the talent, dedication and personal achievement can overcome barriers and inspire a fairer and more accessible society.
The session will bring together leading figures in the portuguese paralympic movementAmongst the athletes, coaches and managers who have made a remarkable contribution to the development of adapted sport in Portugal:
- Carla CardosoShe is the paralympic coach of Ivo Rocha (finalist at Tokyo 2020 and medallist at the Dublin 2018 European Championships), technical coordinator of the Feira Viva Adapted Sports team and has a master's degree in Sports Science;
- Daniel VideiraGesloures swimmer, member of the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee and president of the Paralympic Athletes Commission (2023-2025), with outstanding participations in the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games;
- Luís GestasPresident of ANDDVIS - National Association of Sports for the Visually Impaired, and member of the Rules Advisory Group of the International Blind Sports Federation;
- Mário Trindade, paralympic athlete and world record holder for the longest distance travelled in a wheelchair in 24 hours (183.4 km), currently in the limelight in wheelchair tennis and a candidate for the 2028 Paralympic Games.
A moderation will be in charge of the journalist Edite Dias, from the newspaper The Ball.
The debate will address central themes how:
- the challenges of high-performance training and competition;
- the conditions to expand the pool of disabled athletes;
- public and media recognition of paralympism;
- the role of organisations in promoting inclusion;
- and the strategic vision for the future of the paralympic movement in Portugal.
More than just a meeting to share experiences, this session will be a opportunity for collective reflection on the present and future of inclusive sportI am delighted to have been able to inspire new actions to ensure that more and more people with disabilities have access to sport, whether in recreational contexts or in international competitions.
