"Sporting Unity": An Innovative Project Uniting Global Youth Against Colonial Legacies in Sport

The international project Sporting Unity: Overcoming Colonial Legacies through Olympic EducationThe project, funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme, is being implemented by seven organisations from countries in Europe and Africa - including the Associação de Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (ACOLOP). Lasting 36 months, the project promotes Olympic education and intercultural dialogue as a tool to combat the historical impacts of colonialism on sport.

Starting from the recognition that the modern Olympic Games have been deeply influenced by Eurocentric structures and colonial practices, the Sporting Unity proposes a transformation through digital education and virtual exchange between young people from different cultures. Online educational content, facilitated virtual exchange sessions and training actions will be developed with a focus on values such as inclusion, respect and social justice.

By sharing experiences and critically analysing the past, the project aims to empower more than 1,000 young people and facilitators to become ambassadors for fairer, more representative and more accessible sport for all.

In addition to ACOLOP (Portugal), the following are part of the consortium: Cape Verde Olympic Committee (Cape Verde) AL2 Sport (Italy), ACOLOP, GNO FAR (Senegal), Champions Factory Africa (Ghana), SayPro (South Africa) and the University of Thessaly (Greece).
